Abstract
This study is motivated by the increasing consumption of parenting literacy content by millennial mothers on social media, particularly Instagram, which is not always accompanied by adequate media literacy skills. The aim of this research is to understand how millennial mothers interpret the parenting literacy content titled “Protect Your Daughter Educate Your Son” posted by the Instagram account @parentalk.id, to identify their reception positions based on Stuart Hall’s encoding-decoding theory, and to explore the factors influencing their different interpretations. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, this research involved six millennial mother informants who are active Instagram users and followers of the @parentalk.id account. The findings indicate that interpretations of the content are divided into two decoding positions: three informants were in the dominant position and the other three were in the negotiated position, with none in the oppositional position. These differences in reception are influenced by educational background, personal experience, cultural values, and social environment. These findings highlight the importance of media literacy for millennial mothers in responding critically and wisely to parenting messages in the context of social media.
