Abstract
This study aims to understand the experiences, emotions, and meaning-making processes related to layoffs (PHK) among Generation X employees in the information technology sector. Using a Heideggerian phenomenological approach and the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) method, this research explores the existential dynamics faced by participants across three temporal dimensions: before, during, and after the layoff. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with ten participants and analyzed with the help of NVivo software. The findings reveal that layoffs are not merely perceived as economic or administrative events but as existential moments that disrupt and awaken new self-awareness. Prior to the layoffs, participants tended to be trapped in work routines that dulled self-reflection. During the layoff, they experienced thrownness, marked by anxiety, emptiness, and a sense of loss. However, the post-layoff phase emerged as a turning point: several participants managed to reorient their life direction, build more authentic relationships, and rediscover life’s meaning through domestic roles, entrepreneurial efforts, or digital-based social activities. These findings suggest that layoffs can serve as an opening for Dasein to be more authentically present in its existence. By highlighting crisis as an opportunity for existential transformation, this research contributes theoretically to studies on work identity and psychosocial resilience in the context of job disruption.
