Abstract
In Indonesia, the decision to live a childfree life remains a phenomenon that is not yet fully accepted. This is due to belief’s like “Many Children Many Blessings” and the notion that family is only considered ideal when it includes children are still strongly held by the majority of society. Therefore, this study aims to explore how married couples build mutual understanding in making the decision to live childfree amidst prevailing social pressure and expectations. The concept of Interpersonal Communication is employed to explain how couples engage in discussion, navigate conflict, and demonstrate their readiness to face the consequnces of this choice. A descriptive phenomenological approach is used to analyze the lived experiences of informants who have chosen a childfree lifestyle. The findings reveal that openness, emphaty, support, equality, positive thinking, and the ability to listen are essesntial elements in the couples communication process. When conflict arise, couples tend to resolve them by examining each other’s perception and imagining future. Furthermore, couples are aware of the various consequences of choosing a childfree life and show preparedness in facing them by ignoring unsolicited comments, offering neutral responses, and planning for financial stability.
