Abstract
Living in an urban society often brings various challenges, one of which involves the caregiving of elderly parents by their adult children. The increasing number of elderly people in DKI Jakarta an area largely inhabited by urban communities, highlights the importance of elderly caregiving within urban families. Urban individuals tend to focus on their personal lives, placing caregiving children in dual roles, where they must divide their attention between work and caregiving responsibilities. In practice, communication conflicts between children and their elderly parents frequently occur in urban environments. Thus, in addition to facing the strain of dual roles, caregiving children also experience communication conflict in their relationships with their elderly parents. Communication conflict not only creates tension in the relationship, but also intensifies the dual-role burden carried by children in the complexity of urban life. This research aims to provide an overview of the communication experiences of children who serve as caregivers for their elderly parents in urban communities. This research employs a qualitative method with a social phenomenology approach based on Alfred Schutz. Data were collected through in-depth interviews. The informants in this research were five children who acted as caregivers for their elderly parents in urban settings. The collected data were analyzed using Colaizzi’s method of data analysis. The findings revealed four main themes : everyday communication topics, communication conflicts, communication barriers, and communication imbalance between the child as caregiver and the elderly parent. This research is expected to offer insights into the communication experiences of children as caregivers for elderly parents, particularly in urban environments. Keywords : Children caregivers, Communication, Elderly, Urban society.
