Abstract

Adolescents are individuals aged 10–19 years who are undergoing the transitional phase from childhood to adulthood. Adolescents entering puberty will experience the peak of a cycle of rapid changes in physical, mental, emotional, behavioral, and reproductive maturity. Such significant growth and development require adequate nutritional intake to prevent future nutritional problems, particularly among adolescent girls who are future mothers. One of the major nutritional issues that may affect adolescents is Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED), which can be identified through the measurement of Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) less than 23.5 cm. According to the SKI 2023 data, 20.6% of non-pregnant women in Indonesia were affected by CED, and 41.9% of those were adolescent girls aged 15–19 years. D.I Yogyakarta reported a higher prevalence than the national average, at 21.2%. This study aims to analyze the relationship between factors of age characteristics of adolescents and parents, sociodemographic, dietary intake patterns, infectious diseases, and hygiene behaviors in D.I Yogyakarta. This study employed a cross-sectional method using secondary data from the SKI 2023, involving 275 adolescent girls and there was bivariate analysis was conducted using the chi-square test. The results showed a significant association between mother’s education and the incidence of Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) among adolescent girls in D.I Yogyakarta (p = 0.029), while there was no significant association between the other factors. It hoped that with this study the community will be more active in seeking information and knowledge related to balanced nutrition so that they can understand and apply in their daily lives to prevent CED nutrition problems, especially for mothers and adolescent girls.
