Abstract
Background: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a common condition characterized by a gradual decrease in airflow and damage to lung tissue. This condition occurs due to changes in lung structure caused by long-term inflammation, usually due to continuous exposure to harmful particles or gases, especially from cigarette smoke. This disease is the fourth leading cause of death in the world, with 3.5 million people dying in 2021, which is equivalent to around 5% of all deaths worldwide. The main environmental factors that play a role in the emergence of COPD are smoking and inhaling toxic particles and gases. Physiotherapy can help overcome various respiratory problems, such as difficulty breathing, phlegm production, pain due to spasms in the respiratory muscles, limited chest movement, and decreased activity and functional ability. Objective: This study aims to determine the process of physiotherapy management in cases of COPD. Method: This method used is a case study involving a male patient with the initials Mr. P aged 61 years who experienced complaints of shortness of breath, impaired thoracic expansion development, and decreased quality of life. Results: After being given therapy for four meetings, the results were found to decrease shortness of breath, development of thoracic expansion, and increase in quality of life. Conclusion: After four meetings of physiotherapy intervention using Pursed Lip Breathing, and Active Cycle Breathing Technique, and three meetings using Static Bicycles, the results were reduced shortness of breath, development of thoracic expansion, and increased quality of life.
