Abstract
Pope Francis is a reformist leader of the Vatican, especially towards LGBTQ+ people. He views marginalized groups:LGBTQ+ people as children of God who must be respected and accompanied with compassion. In building his value construction, Pope Francis implements a Catholic Church that is inclusive to everyone, especially to marginalized groups: LGBTQ+ who are often rejected by their social environment and often receive discrimination. Pope Francis as a Jesuit who focuses on serving the people directly to be able to understand and feel the difficulties that marginalized groups:LGBTQ+, experience. The problem formulation in this study is how Pope Francis, as the leader of the Vatican Holy See, constructs value for marginalized groups, specifically the LGBTQ+ community, from 2021 to 2024. The theory used in this research is Alexander Wendt's identity theory by focusing on the concepts of corporate identity, role identity, and collective identity shown by Pope Francis. The purpose of this research is to see how Pope Francis builds value construction towards LGBTQ+ people. Literature review was conducted by reviewing various previous studies relevant to this topic. The research method used is descriptive qualitative by analyzing documents issued by the Holy See. The results of the study show that Pope Francis formed a value construction in the form of acceptance and anti-discrimination towards LGBTQ+ people through an inclusive pastoral approach.
