Abstract
This research discusses the utilization of football as an instrument of French diplomacy, specifically in addressing the issue of African migrants, using the French National Football Team of the 2018-2022 period as the object of study. The background of this study is the complexity of the migration issue from Africa to Europe, where France has become a primary destination for migrants due to several push and pull factors, one of which is the historical ties from the colonial era. This contrasts with several other European countries, particularly in Eastern Europe, which tend to strictly reject the presence of African migrants due to concerns about potential disruptions to political, security, and economic stability. In this context, the diverse composition of the 2018-2022 French National Team holds the potential to change the image of both France and the African migrant community in Europe. This study aims to analyze how France explicitly and successfully used the success and diversity of its national football team as a tool of national diplomacy for the management, empowerment, and integration of African migrants, while also analyzing how this diplomacy model is projected onto the broader context of European migration challenges. The research method employed is qualitative, with data collection techniques including literature review and interviews. Furthermore, this study utilizes international migration theory alongside the concepts of national interest and diplomacy to support the analysis. The findings of this research indicate that football is used as a tool for French diplomacy. By leveraging the diversity within the 2018-2022 national team, France can reshape its national image while demonstrating to other nations that African migrants can contribute positively to a country if they are accepted, empowered, and integrated properly.
