Abstract
Moringa leaves exhibited antifungal potential against Candida albicans due to their high content of active compounds, particularly tannins and alkaloids. Candidiasis had a relatively high prevalence in Indonesia (20–25%), contributing to the growing problem of antifungal drug resistance. The use of Moringa leaves as an antifungal agent was enhanced through the innovation of gamma ray irradiation. At suitable doses, gamma rays increased secondary metabolite levels and improved antimicrobial efficacy. This research examined how varying doses of gamma radiation affected the total active compound content and antifungal activity of Moringa leaf extract against Candida albicans. Applied doses were 0; 2.5; 5.0; 7.5; and 10.0 kGy. Tannin content was determined using the Folin–Ciocalteu assay, alkaloids through the BCG complex method, and antifungal activity via the disk diffusion test. The results showed that 7.5 kGy was the optimal dose, enhancing tannin and alkaloid content and inhibiting fungal growth, with inhibition zones ranging from 3.01 to 4.0 mm. Pearson correlation analysis revealed a strong correlation between irradiation dose and active compound content, and a very strong correlation with antifungal activity.
