Abstract

This study examines the challenges experienced by Russia in its efforts to gain control over the entirety of Ukrainian territory during the 2022–2025 invasion. Despite possessing considerable conventional military advantages, conditions on the battlefield revealed substantial difficulties arising from unpredictable chaos, limited strategic information, and Ukraine’s adaptive responses supported by Western countries. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method, collecting data through literature studies and expert interviews. The analysis is framed by two theoretical perspectives: Fog of War, which emphasizes uncertainty in warfare, and Offensive Realism, which explains a state's pursuit of power through military expansion. The findings indicate that Russia’s inability to realize its territorial objectives stemmed not only from external resistance but also from unexpected internal dynamics on the battlefield. By focusing on operational-level military strategy, this study offers insights into how uncertainty can disrupt planned actions in modern armed conflicts. The research contributes to broader discussions on the Russian invasion of Ukraine and contemporary military strategy.
