Abstract

The highest prevalence of hypertension in Indonesia among individuals aged 15 years and older, based on measurements from the Indonesian Health Survey, is found in West Java Province at 22.29%. This study aims to compare and examine the relationship between public preferences for using natural medicines versus synthetic medicines in the treatment of hypertension. A quantitative approach with a comparative design was employed, using purposive sampling to collect data through questionnaires from 118 respondents. The data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney test to compare consumer preferences for traditional and synthetic medicines, and the Chi-square test to assess the relationship between demographic characteristics and preferences. Results showed that 56% of respondents preferred natural medicines, while 43% preferred synthetic medicines for hypertension treatment. The study found a significant difference in consumer preferences between natural and synthetic medicines (P < 0.001). Additionally, the Chi-square test indicated significant associations between demographic profiles and preferences, specifically for age (asymp. sig. 2-sided = 0.01), education (asymp. sig. 2-sided = 0.021), and occupation (asymp. sig. 2-sided = 0.032).
