Abstract

West Java Province has the highest smoking prevalence among children aged 10–18 years in Indonesia, posing long-term health and economic risks. Understanding factors influencing students’ intention to quit smoking is essential to support control efforts. This study aimed to identify factors associated with the intention to quit smoking among school-aged smokers in West Java. A cross-sectional study was conducted using secondary data from the 2024 Schoolchildren Smoking Behavior Screening (SPMAS) questionnaire. A total of 269 active smokers from junior and senior high schools were included based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results showed that 85.9% of respondents intended to quit smoking. Multivariate analysis using multiple logistic regression found that cigarette purchasing method (aPOR: 0.202; 95% CI: 0.091–0.450) and knowledge that smoking is a gateway to drug use (aPOR: 3.222; 95% CI: 1.371–7.571) were significantly associated with the intention to quit. The most influential factor was how cigarettes were obtained. Tobacco control efforts among schoolchildren should prioritize restricting access to cigarettes and strengthening education on the harms of smoking, particularly its link to drug abuse.
