Abstract
The number of invasive devices installed in patients admitted to the intensive care unit has a higher risk of experiencing HAIs infections in the hospital, one of which is VAP, which is the most common infection in the ICU after endotracheal tube use for more than 48 hours. The oral cavity of an intubated patient becomes an entry point and a colony for the bacteria that cause VAP. In addition, the side effects of drugs that cause xerostomia in these patients also aggravate the condition of the patient's oral cavity. Routine oral care alone is insufficient to address the oral health status of intubated patients. Honey as a natural ingredient is needed to be an additional topical agent in optimizing oral conditions by increasing oral mucosal moisture. The writing of this scientific paper is to analyze the results of the application of oral hygiene interventions using chlorhexidine and honey as additional topical agents in improving oral health status in intubated patients in the intensive care unit. After 3 days every 12 hours of intervention, there was a decrease in the BOAS scale which indicated an improvement in the oral health status of the patient. The use of honey in oral care in intubated patients is expected to be a new innovation as an additional topical agent in improving the oral health status of intubated patients in the ICU.
