Abstract

Photojournalism plays an important role in covering the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by visually conveying the reality on the ground to the wider community. The images taken by journalists not only document an event, but also arouse emotions and shape public perceptions about the conflict. The current digital era makes photos not only important as a medium of communication, but also a business and branding tool for a media. Visually strong photos increase the appeal and economic value of the media. The media often faces a dilemma between enlightening the public and maintaining the existence of its business, which can affect the way news is presented. This study discusses the critical discourse that is built and focuses on the photo rubrics of the media detikcom and CNNIndonesia.com related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The purpose of this study is to describe the discourse of power built by the media through reporting on the Israeli-Palestinian photo conflict. In addition, it also provides an understanding of the basis of power and knowledge in the instruments of power through language in the media. This study uses a qualitative method with a hermeneutic approach, the analysis method is the analysis of Michael Foucault's critical discourse model. The results of the study show that the media plays a crucial role in shaping discourse, producing knowledge, and influencing public perceptions of conflict through the selection of narratives, language, and visuals. The basis of media power lies in control over the information and narratives conveyed. Instruments of power in the media are also related to political economy, where news does not only function as a means of dissemination, but also as an information commodity that attracts public attention and benefits media owners. Thus, the media not only reports an event, but also becomes an actor in shaping social reality and political conflict.
