Abstract

The prevalence of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) among young adults, especially female students, is increasing due to lifestyle factors such as poor food choices, poor sleep quality, and drinks consumed with ingredients that can interfere with iron absorption. The following study aims to understand the relationship between sleep quality, consumption of risky drinks, and the incidence of IDA in nutrition students. To analyze the influence of sleep quality and consumption of risky drinks (such as coffee, tea and milk) on the incidence of iron deficiency anemia in nutrition students at the National Development University “Veteran” Jakarta. A quantitative approach whose design is cross-sectional or cross-sectional was used in this study which was carried out during the period March to June 2024. Data collection was carried out through a questionnaire which included a sleep quality index (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index) and drink consumption patterns (Food Frequency Questionnaire ). The sample consisted of 144 students who were randomly selected. SPSS statistical software was used in analyzing the data to evaluate the relationship between research variables. The results of the study revealed a significant relationship between the frequency of consumption of risky drinks and a decrease in hemoglobin, which indicates a potential increased risk of anemia. Poor sleep quality is also associated with a higher likelihood of experiencing IDA among college students. The findings in this study provide an understanding of whether poor sleep quality and frequency of consumption of certain drinks contribute to the risk of iron deficiency anemia in female students. Educational institutions should promote healthy sleep habits and provide education about food choices that support optimal iron absorption. Further research is recommended to explore other lifestyle factors that influence IDA in young adults.
