Abstract
A first stroke often causes psychological reactions, such as depression, anxiety, and behavioral changes, which worsen cognitive impairment due to brain damage. In the first three months after a stroke, two out of three patients are reported to experience cognitive impairment that has the potential to develop into dementia. Social support plays an important role in recovery by helping adaptation through support. This study aims to determine the relationship between social support and cognitive function in patients after a first stroke. This research is a quantitative study with a cross-sectional approach involving 85 respondents selected through a purposive sampling method. The research was conducted at the Neurology Polyclinic, Tarakan Hospital, Jakarta in November-December 2024. Data was collected using the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) questionnaire to measure social support and the Indonesian version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA-Ina) to assess cognitive function. Descriptive test results show that most respondents have moderate levels of social support and impaired cognitive function. Data analysis using the Spearman test shows a correlation coefficient of 0.695 with a p-value of 0.000 (p<0.05), which indicates a strong and significant positive correlation between the two variables. These results indicate that the higher the social support the patient receives, the better the cognitive function, and vice versa. Future research is expected to explore other factors that influence cognitive function.
