Abstract
Poverty is a global challenge faced by developing countries, including Indonesia. With a population of 277 million, Indonesia ranks sixth in the number of poor people based on international standards. Despite stable economic growth over the past decades, income inequality and poverty remain significant issues, particularly in Sumatra. South Sumatra Province, with its abundant natural and cultural resources, continues to struggle with poverty, which hinders social and economic development. This study aims to examine the factors influencing poverty levels in South Sumatra during the 2014–2023 period. The method used is panel data, combining time series and cross-sectional data with a quantitative approach. Secondary data include poverty indicators, the Gini ratio, gross regional domestic product (GRDP), and government spending from 17 regencies and cities in the province. The analysis reveals that the Gini ratio negatively and significantly affects poverty levels, indicating that more equitable income distribution does not necessarily reduce poverty. Conversely, GRDP has a positive and significant effect, suggesting that non-inclusive economic growth exacerbates inequality. Meanwhile, government spending negatively and significantly impacts poverty, emphasizing the critical role of budget allocation in poverty alleviation.
