Abstract
Pediculosis capitis (PC) is an infection found on head hair and scalp as a result of P. humanus var. capitis or head lice infestation. PC is commonly observed in a dense population such as in orphanages. This study aims to understand the relationship between individual characteristic (gender and density), knowledge, attitude, and hair hygiene behavior and the incidence of pediculosis capitis at Lenteng Agung Orphanage in 2014. This study is an analytical descriptive research with Cross Sectional approach and Chi-Square test, and performed on the orphans in an orphanage located on Lenteng Agung region, South Jakarta in 2014 by using saturation sampling technique with the primary data from questionnaires. The result showed that the incidence of PC was still high at the observed place which was (77.5%), there was a significant relationship between respondents gender and the incidence of PC (p = 0,001) more girls were suffered from PC compared to the boys (62.5%), there was a significant relationship between the density inside the room and the incidence of PC (p = 0,000) most of the orphans slept in highly populous rooms (70%), there was a significant relationship between the knowledge level regarding PC and the incidence of PC (p = 0,000) some respondents demonstrated poor attitude toward the transmission process and prevention of PC, even though the result was not high (45%), there was a significant relationship between attitude toward PC and the incidence of PC (p = 0,002) most of the respondents also lacked of knowledge about PC (72.5%), there was a significant relationship between hair hygiene behavior and the incidence of PC (p=0,000) most of the respondents possessed poor behavior of hair hygiene (67.5%). Conclusion: A significant relationship between individual characteristic (gender and density), knowledge level about PC, attitude toward PC, and hair hygiene behavior and the incidence of PC was observed.
