Abstract
Children with special needs are children who suffer from abnormalities or deviations in physical, mental and intellectual development and growth. These children require attention, special behavior and of course also require different communication patterns from children in general. In this research, researchers aim to deepen their understanding of the approaches, barriers and communication patterns used by caregivers for foster children with special needs at the Sayap Ibu Jakarta Orphanage. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. The data in this research was collected through observation, interviews with five caregivers at the Wing Ibu Orphanage in Jakarta, and also documentation from researchers and the orphanage. Data analysis in this research proposal uses four stages of qualitative analysis techniques by Miles and Huberman. The four stages are data collection, data reduction, data presentation, as well as drawing conclusions and verification. The data validity test was carried out using the triangulation method. The results of this research show that the types of communication patterns used at the Wing Ibu Orphanage in Jakarta are divided into two, namely circular and linear communication patterns. The forms of communication patterns used are the wheel communication pattern and the star communication pattern. The concept of communication patterns used is primary communication patterns which include verbal and nonverbal language.
