Abstract
This research aims to find out how urban communities perceive gender issues presented in the film Barbie (2023). The research uses the Encoding-Decoding Theory developed by Stuart Hall as a theoretical framework. A qualitative approach using Stuart Hall's reception analysis, through in-depth interviews, was chosen to explore the contextual influence of informants as urban residents in perceiving the meaning of media in everyday life. The research results show that all informants are in a negotiating position in the process decoding the film Barbie (2023), namely by accepting the core issues of gender but adjusting the meaning based on the context and personal experiences of each. The differences in geographical, cultural, and social factors that are predominant in Indonesia, particularly in Jakarta as the location of the informants, and with the message producer (the filmmaker), which is Hollywood, play a significant role in the film reception process. Characteristics of urban society such as openness to information media technology, good education, exposure to foreign culture, and progressive social relations influence informants when negotiating issues in films by tending to often consider traditional and modern values, thus experiencing a transformation of values to become more modern. This research is in line with Hall's theory that the process encoding-decoding asymmetrical, with the audience personifying the message to suit their context. Receptions to the issues in the film are open and varied, showing that no one meaning is more correct than another.
