Abstract

Debt collector is a profession that relies on special Communication skills. Unfortunately, the high number of non-performing loans in Jakarta is in line with the increasing news about communication violence committed by debt collectors. This creates a negative stigma in society which views that collection activities carried out by debt collectors are associated with acts of violence. Based on this, this research tries to find out what debt collectors' communication styles are in the field, and find out whether debt collectors use communication violence in collection activities. The method used in this research is qualitative with a phenomenological approach. There were 10 informants that researchers interviewed in this study, including 1 head debt collector, 5 debt collectors and 4 debtors. The informants in this research were spread across several areas in Jakarta, namely Tebet, Tanah Abang, North Petojo, Jagakarsa, Kebayoran Baru, Pantai Indah Kapuk, Blok M, and Rawamangun. Researchers used source triangulation data validity techniques where in this research the researcher checked and harmonized the information from the head of the debt collector, the debt collector, and the debtor. This research shows that the communication style used by debt collectors in collecting receivables is categorized into the relinquishing style of communication, which means that debt collectors tend to show a willingness to listen to suggestions or input from debtors. Researchers found that generally in collection there is negotiation between the debt collector and the debtor. Debt collectors do not necessarily collect with force and violence. Then, the acts of violent communication carried out by debt collectors during collection that researchers encountered in this study were generally acts of threats via telephone and the arrival of debt collectors without the debtor's knowledge. This communication violence is influenced by the debtor's uncooperative attitude in resolving receivable payment problems. Keywords: Debt collector, Violent Communication, Communication Style
