Abstract

Welding is an important manufacturing process in many industries, especially shipping. In this industry, welding distortion is certainly undesirable but acceptable if within standard tolerances. Distortion is a dimensional deviation due to high temperature changes during welding. Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) is a modern welding tool with technological developments, but welding defects are still unavoidable despite using modern tools. The method used is using SS 400 steel and T connection and forward welding sequence. With a variety of supporting parameters such as current strength, voltage, power, and varying welding cable speeds. Then carried out by means of a simulation approach using Simufact Welding 2021 software and by experiment as validation to find the lowest distortion value as the optimal parameter. In simulation and welding experiments have a difference that is not much different, in the simulation the second experiment is the smallest distortion value of 1.01 mm. However, the third trial welding experiment is the smallest distortion value of 1.06 mm. While the second trial welding experiment the distortion value is 1.17 mm. Therefore, the optimal parameters are found in the third experimental experiment, because at the time of the experiment is the most real conditions that exist in the field. This is due to external factors that exist in the field. The third experiment is the most optimal experiment with parameters such as current strength of 150A, voltage of 17.8V, power of 2.67 kW, cable speed of 4 m/min. Then, the third experiment produced an effective stress of 611.38 Mpa. During SEM testing, the welding process can cause changes in the microstructure pattern on the surface of the plate and can add chemical elements to the plate, both internal and external factors.
