Abstract
This research examines the process of vertical technology and knowledge transfer from China to Indonesia with a focus on the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed rail project (Kereta Cepat Indonesia China - KCIC). Vertical technology transfer involves the transfer of knowledge and innovation through different stages of the technology cycle, from basic research to commercial application. In the context of the KCIC project, this technology transfer involves adapting high technologies from China, such as the GSM-R signaling system and complex tunnel construction methods, to suit local conditions in Indonesia. This study highlights various aspects of vertical technology transfer, including research and development (R&D), adaptation of technologies to meet local standards, training and capacity building of the Indonesian workforce, and implementation and commercialization of technologies in the day-to-day operation of high-speed trains. The technology transfer process in the KCIC project successfully adapted high technologies from China, such as the GSM-R signaling system and complex tunnel construction methods, to suit local conditions in Indonesia. This adaptation involved customizing technologies to meet local standards and take into account Indonesia's geographical and environmental conditions. This process not only improves technical and operational capabilities in Indonesia, but also strengthens local capacity to develop and apply high technology in the future. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method, which involves document analysis. The long-term impact of this technology transfer is expected to accelerate the modernization of the transport sector in Indonesia, improve the efficiency and safety of railway operations, and drive economic growth through improved connectivity and mobility. This research provides important insights for the development of technology transfer strategies in other large infrastructure projects in Indonesia.
