Abstract

This research aims to analyze the performance of the Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol on Internet of Things (IoT)-based gas detectors and air monitoring systems using ESP32. Testing is conducted by measuring several Quality of Service (QoS) parameters: throughput, delay, packet loss, and jitter. Data collection spans seven days with three sessions per day. Results indicate that gas detection and air monitoring devices utilizing the MQTT protocol with various QoS levels can operate optimally. Network performance of the MQTT protocol is analyzed based on TIPHON standardization, demonstrating that for gas detectors the highest throughput is achieved with QoS 1 at 52.078 Kbps, the lowest delay is achieved with QoS 1 at 26.121 ms, the lowest jitter is achieved with QoS 1 at 26.122 ms, and the lowest packet loss is achieved with QoS 2 at 0.001%. For air monitoring, the highest throughput is achieved with QoS 2 at 60.125 Kbps, the lowest delay is achieved with QoS 1 at 29.321 ms, the lowest jitter is achieved with QoS 1 at 29.327 ms, and the lowest packet loss is achieved with QoS 2 at 0%. Network performance at each QoS level meets TIPHON standards, concluding that the MQTT protocol can be effectively implemented in IoT systems for gas detection and air monitoring.
