Abstract

Based on experts' predictions long before the electoral moment, the 2024 Presidential and Vice Presidential Election in Indonesia was anticipated to create sharp societal polarization. This has triggered concerns among the public. The aim of this research is to analyze the political polarization during the 2024 Presidential Election through discourse analysis articulated by each candidate pair regarding continuity, change, and rapid progress towards superiority. It identifies how these discourses can create polarization in society. This study employs a descriptive qualitative research method, utilizing both primary and secondary data. Data collection techniques include interviews and literature review encompassing books, journals, news, and relevant research. Social Cleavage Theory is utilized to explain the basis of public support for each discourse. The research findings indicate that these discourses indeed contribute to polarization in society during the 2024 Presidential Election. This is further elucidated through the concept of Political Discourse Analysis, where crucial societal issues are employed to influence public opinion, shape identity, and affect public political preferences. The study also shows that societal divisions serve as a foundation for polarization, supported by interviews with various societal groups. Strong social capital and the discourses brought forth by each candidate pair are shown to influence their political choices. This demonstrates significant developments in electoral political polarization in Indonesia, where the public is no longer easily swayed by misinformation that can exacerbate sharp polarization. The research recommends enhancing media and information literacy for future elections to equip the public with skills to verify disseminated information. Social media often serves as a battleground for diverse political views, yet with appropriate strategies, these platforms can facilitate constructive discussions.
