Abstract
The phenomena in PAUD (Early Childhood Education) classrooms show children are not positively engaged, are unfocused, undisciplined, disruptive, and do not socialize well. This research aims to analyze the role of verbal and nonverbal communication by PAUD teachers in student engagement at PAUD AL-FINA. It uses theories of student engagement, purr words (positive words) and snarl words (negative words), proxemics (distance and space), and operant conditioning with reinforcement and punishment. The study is a descriptive qualitative case study. Data collection includes in-depth interviews (1 key informant and 2 other informants) and participatory observation. Data analysis involves data reduction, coding, data presentation, and verification with data triangulation. Results show early childhood engagement has behavioral and emotional dimensions, both positive and negative. Behavioral engagement includes focus, participation, effort, discipline, orderliness, responsibility, and good play and socialization. Emotional engagement involves self-confidence, comfort, feelings towards friends and teachers, and classroom activities. Purr words ("come on, quickly finish it, later you can play, rest, and eat quickly") make students feel comfortable, confident, adapt to the school environment, and participate well. Snarl words ("if you don't pray, the devil will come close") convey the impact of actions, instill fear and shame, and address bad behavior, but should be stopped as they negatively affect socio-emotional conditions. Proxemics (distance and space) are used by teachers to monitor, help, comfort, show affection, and stimulate students' interest and concentration in class. Keywords: early childhood education, nonverbal communication, student engagement, verbal communication
