Abstract
Elevated triglycerides, which are often seen in diabetic patients, increase the risk of death from cardiovascular disease complications. The utilization of natural materials such as purple eggplant skin containing alkaloids and flavonoids as antioxidants is expected to be a supportive non-pharmacological treatment. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of purple eggplant skin extract (EKTU) on blood triglyceride levels in diabetic Wistar rats. This study adopted true experimental design with post-test control group. The research sample was 36 male wistar rats, healthy, 8-12 weeks old, 150-200 g body weight, taken by simple random sampling from Laboratorium Farmakologi dan Terapi Fakultas Kedokteran Universitas Padjadjaran. Rats were divided into K1 (standard diet, distilled water), K2 (alloxan), K3 (gemfibrozil), and K4, K5, K6 (EKTU 75, 150, 300 [mg/kgBB]). Except for group K1, all groups were induced with alloxan and fed a high-fat diet. The treatment lasted 14 days. Triglyceride assay using the GPO-PAP method. Kruskal Wallis test showed the effect of EKTU on triglyceride levels in diabetic Wistar rats (p=0.039). Mann Whitney test results showed the effect of EKTU dose of 75 mg/kgBW was almost the same as the gemfibrozil group (p=0.917). EKTU administration can reduce triglyceride levels in Wistar diabetic rats.
