Abstract
Students are a population that is vulnerable to experiencing depression. This is because medical students receive constant stress, especially originating from the student's sociodemographics. Depression has mild to severe complications, such as suicide. So it is very important to do research on the factors that influence depression in students. This research was conducted with observational analytic study design, a cross-sectional aproach by simple random sampling. BDI-II was used to measure the level of depression. The research sample consisted of 293 students from the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jakarta. The data was then processed statistically using Chi-square and Multiple Logistic Regression. More than half of the students were in normal category (52.9%). The remaining 24.9% experienced mild depression, 17.4% moderate depression, and 4.8% severe depression. Bivariate tests between gender, semester, place of residence, and socio-economic status on depression levels produced a P-value <0.05, which indicates there is a significant relation between sociodemographic factors with depression levels. Students who live alone are 1.7 times more at risk than students who live with their parents. Gender and socio-economic status are the variables that has most influence on the incidence of depression on medical students. Socioeconomic status has the greatest influence on the incidence of depression, followed by gender. Students with low and middle socioeconomic levels are respectively 3 and 2.6 times more at risk to experiencing depression than students with upper socioeconomic levels. Female students are 1.9 times more likely to experience depression than male students. Keywords : BDI, Depression, Medical Student, Sociodemography Factor
