Abstract

The tight schedule of medical students makes students more likely to consume fast food that is high in fat and not exercise regularly. This triggers an increased risk of obesity and prehypertension which is thought to affect cognitive function. This study aims to compare cognitive function between prehypertensive and obese among medical students with normotensive and normoweight among medical students. This study used a cross-sectional design on 52 medical students who met the criteria and were selected using purposive sampling technique. Body weight and height were measured using a calibrated scale, blood pressure was measured using a digital tensimeter, and cognitive function was measured using the Digit Symbol Substitution Test Questionnaire. The median cognitive function score of the prehypertension and obesity group 35 (21 - 38), while the normotensive and normoweight group 48 (29 - 66). The results of the Mann-Whitney test found that there was a significant difference score of cognitive function value between subject groups (p = 0,000). Prehypertension and obese group have lower cognitive scores than normotensive and normoweight group.
