Abstract
Ischemic stroke in the posterior circulation occurs due to the blockage of blood vessels in the vertebrobasilar circulation of the brain. Although this type of stroke accounts for only 20% of ischemic strokes, it can cause severe functional impairment and often presents with nonspecific symptoms, requiring diagnostic tools such as MRI. The aim of this study was to determine the clinical and radiological features of patients with ischemic stroke in the posterior circulation at RSPAD Gatot Soebroto in 2022. Method: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted, involving the identification of secondary data from patients diagnosed with ischemic stroke in the posterior circulation at RSPAD Gatot Soebroto in 2022 who met the inclusion criteria. Results: Out of 68 patients, the majority were in the 50–59 age group (33.8%; n=23), and males accounted for the highest percentage (70.6%; n=48). Clinical manifestations were predominantly vertigo and unilateral limb weakness, occurring in 25% of patients (n=17). MRI findings showed that the cerebellum was the most commonly affected location of the lesion, affecting 38.2% of patients (n=26), with the majority of lesions being large (61.8%; n=42) and predominantly chronic (50%; n=34) in nature. Conclusion: Data from RSPAD Gatot Soebroto in 2022 indicate that patients with ischemic stroke in the posterior circulation are mostly males aged 50-59 years, presenting with vertigo and unilateral limb weakness. MRI findings commonly show lesions in the cerebellum, which are predominantly large and chronic in nature.
