Abstract

Indonesia is an archipelagic country consisting of 17,500 islands and has a coastline of 81,000 km.Approximately 62% of Indonesia's area is water. To guard the sea borders, Indonesia needs warships to protect the frontier. One of the warships owned by Indonesia is KRI OWA 354. KRI OWA 354 has been in charge of guarding Indonesian waters since 1986. To maintain the components in KRI OWA 354 maintenance is needed for the ship to work optimally. One of the most important part of maintenance is the maintenance of stern tube cooling pipe made of Stainless Steel 316. Due to the ageing factor, the pipe must be replaced during docking. However, when docking, the cooling pipe made of Stainless Steel 316 was Inaccessible and finally used API 5L Carbon Steel. In this study, comparison of corrosion rates between two materials will be carried out to determine the durability of each of these materials. The method used is the weight loss method using seawater as the immersion medium. Based on the test results, the average corrosion rate value of API 5L Carbon Steel is 0.1209 mmpy and the average corrosion rate of Stainless Steel 316 is 0.00794 mmpy. The calculation of the Remaining Service Lifetime of API 5L Carbon Steel is 10 years and 9 months, while the Remaining Service Lifetime of Stainless Steel 316 is 11 years and 3 months.
