Abstract
Background: Hypertension is ranked first as a cause of death worldwide. There is increase in the prevalence of hypertension in Indonesia, from 25.8% in 2013 to 34.1% in 2018. Hypertension is one of the diseases that often appears in shift workers. Irregular schedules such as changes can affect a person's circadian rhythm and can cause blood pressure to go uninterrupted. Methods: This study is a systematic review conducted on PUBMED and BMC data centers. The keywords used are "shift work" AND "blood pressure". Results: There were 7 articles included in the study. Five of the seven articles showed that there was a significant relationship between work shifts and blood pressure. Shift workers are more prone to developing cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension because of disruption to circadian rhythms caused by irregular work schedules. The more rotational shifts, the less impact on sleep duration. Shift work also indirectly increases consumption of carbohydrate-rich foods and alters the lipid profile of triglyceride levels, leading to obesity and elevated blood sugar. Conclusion: There is a relationship between work shifts and blood pressure, that is, work shifts tend to increase blood pressure. The mechanisms underlying this vary but all share the same root, namely disruption of circadian rhythms due to changing work schedules on shift work.
