Abstract
ASSOCIATION BETWEEN MEDICATION ADHERENCE AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY WITH BLOOD PRESSURE CONTROL AMONG ELDERLY HYPERTENSIVE OUTPATIENTS IN PUSKESMAS KECAMATAN KOJA Ezra Febriani Hutasoit Abstract Hypertension is one of the most common diseases in the elderly. The problem that often arises in hypertensive outpatients is the lack of patient’s medical adherence. Apart from that, hypertension can also be influenced by physical activity. This study was conducted to determine the association between medication adherence and physical activity with blood pressure control among hypertensive outpatients in Puskesmas Kecamatan Koja. This study was an observational analytic in design, using a cross-sectional study approach. Medication adherence and physical activities were assessed by using Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8) and Physical Activities Scale for the Elderly (PASE) questionnaires respectively. The study involved 50 elderly respondents aged ≥64 years and used purposive sampling technique. Chi-square tests showed a significant relationship (p<0,05) between medication adherence with blood pressure control (p=0,001) and between physical activity with blood pressure control (p=0,002). It can be concluded that there is a significant association between medication adherence and physical activity with blood pressure control among elderly hypertensive outpatients in Puskesmas Kecamatan Koja. Controlled blood pressure by regulating cardiac output that inhibits myocardial contractility and peripheral resistance will causes vascular relaxation and an increase in the sympathetic nervous system.
