Abstract
This study examines the construction of myth and negative labeling in Hirokazu Kore-eda's film Monster using Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis. Monster was selected as the object of this study because its three-perspective narrative structure demonstrates how prejudice, stigma, and negative labeling can be constructed from incomplete information. This study aims to analyze the denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings embedded in the film in order to reveal the process through which negative labeling is constructed through visual and verbal signs. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method, with data collected through observation and documentation of selected scenes, dialogues, character expressions, and visual symbols presented in Monster. The data were analyzed using Roland Barthes' theory of signification, consisting of signifier, signified, denotation, connotation, and myth. The findings reveal that negative labeling in Monster is constructed gradually through a process of signification in which denotative meanings develop into connotative meanings and eventually become social myths. At the denotative level, the film presents events related to alleged violence in schools, bullying, family dysfunction, and gender stigma. At the connotative level, these events generate particular perceptions of the characters based on different narrative perspectives. At the mythical level, the film demonstrates how prejudice and stereotypes are naturalized into negative labels that are accepted as social truths despite the absence of complete understanding. Through its multilayered narrative structure, Monster criticizes society's tendency to normalize stigma and assign labels to individuals based on unverified assumptions. This study is expected to contribute to the development of communication studies, particularly in the fields of semiotics, film analysis, and the study of myth construction and negative labeling in mass media.
