Abstract
This study aims to identify and analyze the representation of feminism in the live-action film Mulan (2020). The study employs a qualitative method using Roland Barthes’s semiotic analysis approach. Data collection was conducted through observation and documentation by selecting scenes that represent feminist values, which were then analyzed using three levels of meaning: denotation, connotation, and myth. Roland Barthes’s semiotic theory was used to uncover the directly apparent meanings, the implicit meanings, and the ideologies constructed through symbols, dialogue, and the characters’ actions in the film. The results of the study indicate that the live-action film Mulan (2020) represents feminist values through scenes that depict courage, independence, gender equality, and women’s ability to challenge stereotypes and take on roles in the public sphere. Based on an analysis of denotation, connotation, and myth, this film conveys the message that women have rights, potential, and opportunities equal to those of men in making life choices and contributing to society.
