Abstract
Family communication inequality caused by parents controlling interaction patterns is often represented in popular music, yet rarely examined through sign analysis. This study describes the representation of power asymmetry in family communication through denotation, connotation, and myth in the lyrics of “Taruh” by Nadin Amizah, using a descriptive approach with Roland Barthes’s semiotics combined with Family Communication Patterns Theory (FCPT) at the connotative level, through its conversation and conformity orientation dimensions. The denotative analysis shows a one-way communication patterns, an emphasis on obedience, and verbal aggression between parent and child. FCPT reveals, at the connotative level, the characteristics of a protective family with low conversation orientation and high conformity orientation, which becomes the root of the character’s self-disclosure barrier. This representation shifts in the second phase, more accurately read as the character’s resistance to the asymmetrical pattern learned since childhood, marked by a shift toward a more open romantic relationship as the power relation pattern moves from one-spouse-dominant to syncratic. The lyrics represent two related myths at the mythical level, the normalization of parental domination as a form of affection in Indonesian family culture, and the belief that this naturalization can be resisted through individual awareness an openness.
