Abstract

This study aims to understand Generation Z in experiences searching for and making meaning of film references through social media. Using a qualitative with Max van Manen’s phenomenological method, data was collected through observation and in-depth interviews with six informants who actively search for film references on social media. The findings reveal that the experiences are reflected across four existential dimensions. In the dimension of lived space, informants utilize TikTok, Instagram, X, and YouTube as search spaces selected based on their specific characteristics and needs. In the lived time dimension, time is interpreted through the experience of it seeming to pass quickly because the informants enjoy the activities they are engaged in. In the dimension of lived body, mood plays a crucial role in selecting film recommendations that align with the informants emotional states. In the dimension of lived relation, most informants maintain their personal judgments despite exposure to diverse opinions on social media, whereas one informant demonstrates a greater openness to the emotional influence of the content encountered. The study concludes that searching for film references is not merely an information gathering activity but an active process of assigning personal meaning, shaped by each individual's space, time, body, and social relations.
