Abstract

Visuals in hard news are not merely a complement to the narrative, but a key element that determines the quality of information delivery. This study aims to analyze how the selection of visuals in directing techniques and processes shapes the quality of news coverage in the report “Joko Widodo Leaves Jakarta for Solo” on SCTV’s Liputan6, which faced challenges in the form of demands for speed and protocol restrictions. Using a qualitative case study approach and Shoemaker and Vos’s (2009) Gatekeeping Theory, data were collected through observation, documentation, and semi-structured interviews with the program director and cameramen. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman interactive model with the assistance of NVivo 14, and its validity was tested through triangulation of sources and methods. The research results indicate that the visual gatekeeping process occurs from the planning stage through the pre-broadcast selection phase. The program director and cameraman act as visual gatekeepers who select footage based on informational value, technical quality, continuity, and broadcast standards. The application of camera angle, shot size, camera movement, and composition techniques effectively builds a cohesive visual narrative, despite being constrained by on-site conditions. The visual quality of news is a combination of editorial decisions, the adaptation of directing techniques, and visual gatekeeping mechanisms in representing reality to the audience.
