Abstract
This study aims to examine the effect of candidate image on political participation among the people of East Bekasi District in the 2024 Bekasi City Regional Head Election (Pilkada). This study focuses on the people of East Bekasi District as the research object, using a quantitative approach with an explanatory research design. The data used were primary data, with a population of 198,520 people registered on the Permanent Voter List (DPT), and 100 respondents selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through a survey using questionnaires, with the variables measured using a Likert scale. This study employs Newman’s (2016) Candidate Image Theory and Almond and Powell’s (1966) Political Participation Theory. The results show that candidate image has a positive and significant effect on political participation. This is indicated by a regression coefficient of 0.642, suggesting that an increase in candidate image is associated with an increase in political participation. The coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.386 indicates that 38.6% of the variation in political participation can be explained by candidate image, while the remaining 61.4% is influenced by other factors outside the study. The t-test results show that the calculated t-value of 7.844 is greater than the critical t-value of 1.984, indicating that H₀ is rejected and Hₐ is accepted. The study concludes that candidate image plays an important role in increasing political participation in the 2024 Bekasi City Regional Head Election. The more positive the candidate image perceived by the public, the higher their tendency to participate in the political process. Therefore, candidates and election organizers should strengthen political communication strategies that foster public trust. Future research is also recommended to include other variables to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing political participation.
