Abstract

This study aims to analyze the participatory communication practices implemented by the Kids Biennale Indonesia Community in appreciating Indonesian children's art through children's art exhibitions. The research adopts a critical paradigm using a qualitative approach and a case study method. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving community organizers, child exhibitors, and parents or guardians. Data analysis was conducted using Tufte and Mefalopulos’ participatory communication framework, which encompasses dialogic, inclusive, locally contextualized, and empowerment dimensions. The findings reveal that participatory communication is manifested through dialogic spaces that enable children to express their ideas and experiences through artworks, equal involvement of various stakeholders regardless of background, activities tailored to children's needs and lived experiences, and opportunities for children to act as agents of social change. The art exhibition functions not only as a platform for displaying artworks but also as a space for interaction, learning, and appreciation that encourages self-expression and recognizes children's voices. This study concludes that the participatory communication practices implemented by the Kids Biennale Indonesia Community contribute to the development of an inclusive, dialogic, and empowering environment for appreciating children's art.
