Abstract
This research analyzes the representation of hegemony, resistance, and forms of value acceptance (consent and tolerance) within the Viking society depicted in the film How to Train Your Dragon (Live Action). This study utilizes a qualitative approach with Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis method, examining visual and verbal signs through three levels of meaning: denotation, connotation, and myth. Antonio Gramsci's theory of hegemony, James C. Scott's resistance, and Osman's (2025) consent-tolerance concept are applied as an interpretive framework across six units of analysis. The results indicate that the authority's hegemony in the Berk society is systematically maintained through institutional mechanisms, such as the Book of Dragons literature and the Trial of Flame educational institution. The rulers exploit crises to transform citizens' passive tolerance into active consent to perpetuate the ideology that dragons are absolute enemies. Subsequent findings reveal resistance from the subordinate group that evolves gradually alongside shifts in space and the quantity of actors: starting from closed resistance individually in private spaces, escalating to semi-open resistance through demonstrative acts in the public arena, and culminating in open resistance through the organization of collective movements. This study concludes that the absolute hegemony of the rulers can be radically deconstructed when individual critical awareness is successfully mobilized into an open social movement to establish a counter-hegemony.
