Abstract
Background: Lung disease or respiratory system disorders are one of the main health issues in Indonesia, with respiratory disease ranking as the 10th most common disease. Broadly speaking, lung diseases are divided into two categories, namely infectious and non-infectious lung diseases. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a type of non-communicable disease characterized by narrowing of the respiratory tract, resulting in complaints such as shortness of breath and increased sputum production. This condition is often triggered by risk factors such as smoking and long-term exposure to air pollution, which negatively impacts the health of the respiratory system. The accumulation of sputum that is difficult to expel can cause ineffective airway clearance. Therefore, one effective non-pharmacological intervention to remove secretions is the effective cough technique. Objective: This scientific paper aims to describe nursing care for COPD patients who experience ineffective airway clearance problems through the application of effective cough techniques at Pasar Minggu Regional General Hospital, South Jakarta. Method: The approach used is a descriptive case study of one patient with a medical diagnosis of COPD. Data collection was conducted through interviews, observations, physical examinations, and medical record reviews, following the nursing process that includes assessment, diagnosis, intervention planning, implementation, and evaluation. Results: The application of effective coughing techniques showed positive results, where patients were able to expel sputum more smoothly and complaints of shortness of breath experienced a significant decrease. Conclusion: Effective coughing techniques have been proven to increase the effectiveness of airway clearance in patients with PPO, so they are worthy of being recommended as a non-pharmacological nursing intervention. Recommendation: It is recommended that patients and their families understand and practice effective coughing techniques independently to support the improvement of the patient's respiratory condition.
