Abstract
Background: Pneumonia is a respiratory system infection that can cause dyspnea, productive cough, and secretion accumulation, leading to ineffective airway clearance. This condition may reduce oxygenation and worsen the patient’s respiratory status. One non-pharmacological intervention that can be applied is the effective cough technique to help remove secretions and improve lung ventilation. Objective: To identify the effectiveness of implementing the effective cough technique in nursing care for pneumonia patients with ineffective airway clearance. Methods: This study used a descriptive case study method with a single case study approach. The subject of the study was one pneumonia patient at Pasar Minggu Regional General Hospital. Data were collected through interviews, observations, physical examinations, and secondary data from medical records. The effective cough technique intervention was applied consistenly for 3 days to assess the ability of secretion clearance, respiration rate, oxygen saturation, and changes in the patient’s clinical condition during the treatment period. Results: The evaluation showed that the respiration rate decreased from 22 breaths/minute to 18 breaths/minute, and oxygen saturation increased from 94% to 99%, accompanied by a reduction in dyspnea, decreased sputum production, and improved ability of the patients to expectorate secretions independently. The implementation of the semi fowler position helped improved lung expansion and supported more optimal ventilation during the treatment period. Conclusion: The implementation of the effective cough technique has been proven to improve airway clearance in pneumonia patients. This intervention is recommended as an effective and easily applicable non pharmacological nursing intervention. Hospital are expected to implement the effective cough technique as mandatory education for patients with ineffective airway clearance problems.
