Abstract
Sexual violence remains a serious social issue in Indonesia and is often framed as a sensitive topic that is difficult to discuss in public spaces. The development of social media, particularly Instagram, has created new spaces for information dissemination and public awareness-building regarding sexual violence. One Instagram account that consistently addresses this issue is @perempuanberkisah, which presents educational content and narratives grounded in feminist ethics. This study aims to examine audience reception of sexual violence content related to the I Wayan Agus case on the Instagram account @perempuanberkisah, as well as to understand how the narratives are interpreted in shaping audience awareness and vigilance toward sexual violence. This research employs a qualitative approach using Stuart Hall’s reception analysis through the encoding-decoding model. The research subjects consist of ten followers of the Instagram account @perempuanberkisah aged 21–25 years with diverse backgrounds. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, content observation, and documentation. The analysis categorizes audience interpretations into three reading positions: dominant-hegemonic, negotiated, and oppositional. The findings indicate that most informants occupy the dominant-hegemonic and negotiated positions. Audiences in the dominant position fully accept the messages conveyed by @perempuanberkisah, particularly narratives emphasizing support for victims and framing sexual violence as a structural issue. Meanwhile, audiences in the negotiated position accept the core message but express critical views regarding the completeness of information and the presentation style of the captions. Nevertheless, overall, the caption narratives are perceived as effective in fostering awareness, empathy, and vigilance toward sexual violence. This study highlights that Instagram, through victim-centered narratives grounded in feminist ethics, plays a strategic role in disseminating public awareness of sexual violence.
