Abstract

Pain management is a crucial component of postoperative care for fracture patients, as uncontrolled pain can impede mobilization, delay healing, and reduce overall quality of life. Pharmacological analgesics are commonly administered but may cause adverse effects when used long-term. Therefore, non-pharmacological approaches such as Ice Pack Gel Therapy offer a safe, practical, and effective alternative for reducing postoperative pain. This scientific paper aims to analyze the implementation of nursing care using Ice Pack Gel Therapy to reduce pain levels in postoperative fracture patients at Gatot Soebroto Army Hospital (RSPAD). The writing design employs a case study involving two patients the primary managed patient and a secondary resume patient focusing on the nursing diagnosis of Acute Pain. The intervention consisted of applying an ice pack gel for 15 minutes once daily over three consecutive days, accompanied by hemodynamic monitoring and pain assessment using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) before and after each session. The implementation results demonstrated a significant reduction in pain intensity in both patients. In the primary patient, pain scores decreased from 7 to 5, then further declined to 4 on the following day. Meanwhile, in the resume patient, pain levels decreased from 8 to 3. Both patients exhibited stable hemodynamic parameters, no adverse reactions were observed, and patients appeared more relaxed, comfortable, and able to rest after the therapy. Nursing evaluation indicated that the intervention effectively alleviated acute pain through mechanisms of vasoconstriction, reduced nerve impulse transmission, decreased inflammation, and enhanced patient comfort. In conclusion, Ice Pack Gel Therapy is proven to be an effective, safe, simple, and applicable non-pharmacological intervention for managing pain in postoperative fracture patients. This intervention also supports efforts to reduce reliance on pharmacological analgesics. Nurses are recommended to integrate this technique into evidence-based nursing practice, particularly in perioperative pain management.
