Abstract
This study aims to explain the cooperation between Yayasan Bina Antarbudaya (AFS Indonesia) and AFS Japan within the framework of AFS Intercultural Programs in addressing culture shock experienced by Indonesian students participating in the Asia Kakehashi Project (AKP) during the 2018–2023 period. This research adopts a qualitative approach with a descriptive case study strategy. Primary data were obtained through in-depth interviews with two staff members of Yayasan Bina Antarbudaya as the sending organization and three AKP alumni, while secondary data were collected from official AFS documents, program reports, and academic publications related to intercultural education. The analysis employs the Interorganizational Cooperation theory proposed by Clive Archer to examine the dynamics of cross-border interorganizational cooperation, particularly in terms of shared objectives, division of roles, coordination mechanisms, and program implementation. The concept of culture shock developed by Kalervo Oberg is used as a supporting concept to analyze the intercultural adaptation process of Indonesian students in Japan. The findings indicate that the cooperation between Yayasan Bina Antarbudaya and AFS Japan is implemented through three main stages: pre-departure, program implementation in Japan, and post-program. The support provided by both organizations plays an important role in assisting participants in overcoming the crisis phase of culture shock and achieving a more stable level of cultural adjustment. Keywords: Bina Antarbudaya, AFS Japan, culture shock, Asia Kakehashi Project, interorganizational cooperation
