Abstract
Stroke is a major cause of long-term disability due to hemiparesis, which directly impacts the patient's functional abilities, which play a role in the independence of Activity Daily Living (ADL) and the patient's quality of life. Effective rehabilitation is an important part of stroke management to prevent complications and long-term disability, namely with Mirror therapy intervention combined with Range of motion (ROM) which functions to maintain joint flexibility, increase muscle strength, and optimize movement ability. This case study aims to analyze nursing care and evaluate the effectiveness of Mirror therapy combined with Range of motion in increasing muscle strength in stroke patients with hemiparesis who are treated at the Stroke Unit of a Hospital in Jakarta. The intervention was carried out for three days with a frequency of twice a day in the morning and afternoon, each for 30-40 minutes. Muscle strength assessment was carried out through Manual Muscle Testing (MMT) before and after the intervention. The case study consists of two female stroke patients with hemiparesis. The first patient is 56 years old with hemorrhagic stroke and has a history of hypertension since 2018. The second patient is 70 years old with ischemic stroke and a history of diabetes mellitus. After the intervention, the first patient showed an increase in upper extremity muscle strength from scale 2 to 3 and lower extremity from scale 3 to 4. In the second patient, there was an increase in lower extremity muscle strength from scale 2 to 4, while the upper extremity remained at scale 2. These results indicate that there was an increase in muscle strength and improvement in motor skills in both patients as indicated by an increase in MMT scores in both stroke patients after the Mirror therapy combined Range of motion intervention. Therefore, this intervention can be considered effective as part of rehabilitation in stroke patients who experience muscle weakness or hemiparesis.
