Abstract
The documentary film titled “Nelayan Eksil” explores the issue of coastal development and its impact on the lives of fishermen in Cilincing District, North Jakarta. Through the direct perspectives of the fishermen, this film presents information that is visually engaging for the audience. The approach employed is free cinema with a participatory mode, aiming to create an emotional connection with viewers. Beyond capturing the complexity of fishermen’s struggles, this documentary also encourages the involvement of both the government and the public in finding appropriate solutions. In this project, the documentarian serves as the director, responsible for the film’s creative direction. In documentary filmmaking, a director’s role extends beyond shaping the vision and narrative style—they must also deeply understand the facts and events being portrayed. Beyond technical proficiency, the director is required to demonstrate strong leadership to coordinate the production team effectively and ensure a smooth filmmaking process.
