Abstract
Cholelithiasis is a condition characterized by the formation of solid deposits from bile within the gallbladder. The gold standard treatment for symptomatic cholelithiasis is laparoscopic cholecystectomy, which is preferred due to its minimally invasive nature, lower risk of complications, and faster recovery compared to open cholecystectomy. However, preliminary studies indicate that patients often experience preoperative anxiety, manifested as elevated blood pressure, muscle tension, difficulty resting, and fear. Such anxiety may prolong hospitalization or even result in the cancellation of the surgical procedure. Non-pharmacological interventions, such as hand massage, can be employed to reduce preoperative anxiety. Hand massage is a simple, non-invasive technique involving gentle hand manipulation that promotes relaxation and comfort. This case study involved two female patients with cholelithiasis scheduled for laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Hand massage was administered three times, each session lasting 10 minutes, and anxiety levels were measured using the Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS) before and after the intervention. Results showed a reduction in APAIS scores from 18 to 10 in the managed patient (Mrs.E) and from 16 to 9 in the resumed patient (Mrs.Z), shifting from moderate to mild anxiety. In conclusion, hand massage effectively reduces preoperative anxiety through mechanoreceptor stimulation, muscle relaxation, and autonomic nervous system stabilization. This intervention is safe, simple, and evidence-based, making it a practical approach in perioperative nursing care.
