Abstract

Heart disease is a major factor contributing to illness and death worldwide and is increasingly identified in early adulthood. However, evidence on risk factors among young adults in Indonesia remains limited, particularly studies using large-scale national data. This study aimed to analyze risk factors associated with heart disease among individuals aged 25–34 years using data from the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey (SKI). A quantitative cross-sectional design was applied to 115,003 respondents. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate methods, with Fisher’s Exact test for diabetes mellitus and hypertension, and Chi-Square tests for other variables. The prevalence of heart disease was 0.2%. Diabetes mellitus (OR = 7.53; p = 0.008) and hypertension (OR = 15.57; p < 0.001) were significantly associated with heart disease. Smoking behavior, consumption of sugary foods, sugar-sweetened beverages, and fatty foods also showed significant associations, whereas physical activity, salty food consumption, and instant food consumption were not significantly associated. In conclusion, hypertension and diabetes mellitus are the main risk factors for heart disease in early adulthood, emphasizing the importance of early detection and risk factor control from a young age to prevent future cardiovascular burden.
